Welcome to America

BBC NEWS | Americas | US memo shows Iraq jail methods

The BBC reports that the AMERICAN Civil Liberties Union has required documents through the Freedom of Information Act which demonstrates EXPLICIT approval for TORTURE techniques by our COMMANDER OF US FORCES IN IRAQ. Hey... this sounds like something an American news network should be broadcasting first, but then again, it probably hasn't yet squeaked through the Defense Department "advisors" that have been chilling over at CNN since the war began.

CNN... I might be in the mood for forgiveness.

CNN.com - Human rights report criticizes Pakistan, China - Mar 28, 2005: "WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department renewed its criticism of the human rights records of Pakistan and China on Monday in a report that followed U.S. decisions to arm Pakistan with jet fighters and to avoid a showdown with China on the way it treats its people."

Beautiful. Thank you CNN. Granted... maybe if the title said it... or the ticker... how people seem to get their news framed these days, no? Maybe if you rehashed the titles a little bit, made them a bit more pertinent to the issue at hand within the context of immeadiate events around it. That intro sentence does just that, and I applaud; but you have to bring that twist into the title... give them something to sink their teeth into which forces them to reflect on their patriotism by asking them what America means. Maybe it's just me... but maybe language has that power.

Thank you Mr. Gere

CNN.com - Actor Gere in tango with Beijing - Mar 28, 2005: "After promoting his new film 'Shall We Dance?,' in which he co-stars with Jennifer Lopez, Gere grabbed a microphone to denounce plans by the European Union to lift the embargo imposed after China's bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 1989."

Thanks Richard Gere. You have fully enlightened me on the subject. And as a fully enlightened Buddhist, could I expect not just for you to offer helpful political world advice in a timely matter, but also quit participating in an industry which not only encourages, but thrives on sloth, violence, and greed. I mean, if you're a big enough asshole to tell world leaders how to do their fucking job right after plugging your movie, maybe you could listen to some of the Christian world leaders who would tell you to get the fuck off the stage. Of course, that wouldn't be Buddhist in the American sense of free reigning narcissism, but only in the insultingly ethical sense... and we all know ethics are bunk, especially Buddhists. So please Richard Gere, send your Ghiwang right back up your anus and stop talking the fucking talk until you walk the fucking walk. You are insulting humanity.

Uhm...?

So the House voted on the Schiavo thing... politics as usual blah blah blah blah blah... apparently however the Senate conducted a voice vote, with only a few of its members present... yet not one news service can even say how many Senators were present at roll call, let alone how they voted (which in a voice vote is acceptable, though a voice vote seems an interesting choice on such a politcally charged case). So, if anyone can figure out who/howmany voted in the Senate on this issue, please let me know. Besides of course the cosponsors of the bill, Sen. Frist, Sen. Santorum, and Sen. Martinez.

Vernal Equinox

On this wonderful night of the Vernal Equinox... celebrate. It's spring. If you can't appreciate that, please note the exit signs posted in all public walkways. If it embarrases you to say hello to a stranger who addresses you on the walk... please go fuck yourself. Consider this a toast to spring... and do drink to that, I know I am. :)

The New Atlantis - The Age of Egocasting - Christine Rosen

Damn ipods. At least I'm not the only one who thinks they're cowardly, retreatist devices used primarily by characters unable to interact in a healthy manner with the world at large.

Winning the war of minds...

Aljazeera.Net - Paper: Sgrena wounded by US fire

I don't see why the Italians think they should be getting better treatment then ordinary Iraqis. If we see a suspicious car, it gets shot. End of story. Why the Italians were driving around in that neighborhood is, to me, suspect in and of itself. When it comes down to it, Iraq is a lawless, rubblefied state existing in a state of anarchy. It's not the new European vacation retreat. Indonesia's sweet beaches might currently be in disrepair, but although Iraq has lots of beach, most of the major bodies of water have receeded since Noah's flood. The Tigris and the Eurphrates do make compelling destinations, but they're also repositoires of munition by-products of all sorts... as well as the occasional American sympathizer. All in all, Iraq is our playground, and we don't have to share with anybody. We're America damnit.
